Nachtschwärmer

A photography series about the artificial lightscape of Vietnam.

Nachtschwärmer
Overview

Vietnam’s daytime often brings with it an oppressive heat and humidity that seems to chase people away from the sun’s natural light. Yet, when night falls, we willingly immerse ourselves in a landscape bathed in artificial light. Neon signs pulse and flicker, illuminating street vendors, restaurants, karaoke bars, and the towering silhouettes of skyscrapers. The artificial lightscape of Vietnam not only guides us through the darkness but also becomes part of our urban rhythm, replacing the sun as a source of comfort.

In Nachtschwärmer (Nighthawks), I explore this nocturnal realm where synthetic light transforms the city into a hyper-saturated dreamscape. Through this series, I reflect on the evolving relationship between artificiality and authenticity, as light shapes the way we move, interact, and experience our surroundings. These photographs capture how this glowing simulation is woven into the fabric of the urban night, revealing how we navigate and respond to this manufactured environment.
